On Sunday, 5 DEC 21, on the 75th EPISODE of New Paradigms with Sargis Sangari, we celebrate our beloved WWII Veteran, former Captain Betty C. Horstman, for her 100 years of service to the nation.
The men and women of the #Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 3579 are blessed to have the opportunity to listen to the wit and undiminished wisdom of Betty Horstman as she recalls the highs and lows of her life in the Army during #WWII. From treating #Italian #PoWs in Hawaii to #Japanese PoWs in #Saipan, and US military injured throughout the #Pacific, Betty provides insights into some of the keys to success and long life.
One of those keys, according to Betty, is to stay active and volunteer. And volunteer she did. After WWII, Betty used the skills she learned in the #Army and began to set up Physical Therapy (#PT) programs in local #Chicago area #hospitals when there were none in all of Illinois and only a handful across the nation. Her ability to “think outside the box” from the Army paid off. Betty became the PT advisor for the Arch Diocese of Chicago. In addition, she trained other nurses to care for elderly #nursing home residents during PT recovery.
Even at 100, Betty is still volunteering. For the last few decades, she has taken an active role in the #VFW, the #AmericanLegion, and the Chicago #VA. We can all learn from Betty’s activity, outlook on life, good humor, and commitment to service. Please join me in wishing our beloved former Captain #BettyHorstman a happy 100th Birthday.
