609 killed in Turkey since June 2015

Three suicide bombers have attacked Ataturk Airport in Istanbul, Turkey. According to early reports both the domestic and international terminals were targeted, with 36 killed and at least 147 wounded in the attacks.  Except some fluctuation as grievously wounded die in coming hours.

It is being reported that the explosives carried by the three bombers.  One blew up his own vest and the other two may have been detonated remotely, after police shot them. Again, if this is true, this is a significant development in the type of weapons capability used by terrorists in the urban environment.  A magnetic switch is a possibility given it has been used in Turkey before.

Although no group has taken responsibility for the bombings, the PKK and ISIS have both attack the airport in the past.  Turkish government is pointing the finger to ISIS.

Security at Ataturk Airport consists primarily of metal decorators at the entrances monitored by guards armed with MP5s at the low ready. Additional security inside the terminals is provided multiple sets of roving guards. How the bombers penetrated the entrances remains unknown at this time.

With the reality that the region may be turned over to Russia after the U.S. pull out from the area Turkey decided to apologize to Russia for downing the Russian fighter jet and renew its relationship with Israel.  Given Turkeys links to ISIS internal decent of the various groups that are now competing for survival after the “defeat” of ISIS network these attacks will increase until the Mosul operations have concluded.
