Will Iran’s most popular general enter politics?

On 4 JUN 16 NEC-SE posted: Who is Major General Qasim Soleimani?

In the article we stated: “Major General Qasim Soleimani has been described as “the single most powerful operative in the Middle East today” and the principal military strategist and tactician in Iran’s effort to combat Western influence and promote the expansion of Shiite and Iranian influence throughout the Middle East.”

“June 2016, Major General Soleimani is leading the fight to take Fallujah in Iraq. He is projected to secure Fallujah sooner than expected given U.S. Air Platform are now conducting pinpointed airstrikes against enemy targets which are being called in by the U.S. Special Operations Joint Terminal Attack Controllers (JTAC’s).”

On 14 JUN 16 Al Monitor speculates on Soleimani’s possibility of running for office in next years Iranian elections.

“With the presidential election one year away, the Iranian press is already speculating about Quds Force commander Qasem Soleimani entering the race.”

“When the Iranian general allowed himself to be photographed at the front lines of bloody wars, his popularity soared and he was often compared to Iran’s popular and social media-savvy top diplomat, Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif.  With the massive popularity has now come speculation and concern that Soleimani, who has mostly kept a cool distance from partisan politics in his nearly 20 years as head of the Quds Force, could run in the upcoming presidential election. Conservatives may like to run popular figures like Soleimani, and many Reformists and moderates would likely be reluctant to run against someone of Soleimani’s stature.”
