Near East Center for Strategic Engagement celebrates 1^st year Anniversary

Today-Sept. 11^th 2015 is the first year anniversary of the Near East Center for Strategic Engagement (NEC-SE). There is much to reflect. Thanks for being so supportive of our work! 

While on the topic of anniversaries, who can fail to also notice that Sept. 11^th is not only the anniversary of the successful terrorist attack against America but also the successful counter-attack by Americans on United Airlines Flight 93 against those same terrorists. The Americans waged an effective assault against the hijackers, which while not resulting in regained control of the flight, frustrated the terrorist plan to hit either the White House or the Capitol Rotunda. In short the plane crashed into an uninhabited field in Pennsylvania. The last moments of the United Airlines flight 93 cockpit transcript and data established-in the midst of the passenger assault apparently facilitated with a food cart and scalding water prepared by a stewardess-document hijacker Ziad Jarrah asking at 10:00, “Is that it? Shall we finish it off?” Another hijacker responded, “No. Not yet. When they all come, we finish it off.” Then there appears to be a struggle, and at 10:02:17 a male passenger said, “Turn it up!” and then a hijacker said, “Pull it down! At 10:02:33, another hijacker (or possibly the same) pleaded, “Hey! Hey! Give it to me. Give it to me. Give it to me. Give it to me. Give it to me. Give it to me. Give it to me. Give it to me.” Flight 93: The Story, the Aftermath, and the Legacy of American Courage on 9/11, pp 104-105

The effort paid off and thus, they “gave it to them” and the airplane nosedived and crashed at 10:03:11. It helped that the so-called 5^th hijacker-Mohamed al Khatani was denied entry by immigration inspector Jose Melendez Perez doing his job despite a complaint system that enabled immigration so easily without check.

There is another “9/11,” to consider on September 11th, 1683. An alliance of Christian armies led by Jan III Sobieski, the King of Poland, arrived at the Gates of Vienna. This frustrated the efforts of the Turkish “immigrants” to take Vienna and Europe.

We now contemplate a third de-facto attack on the West today as Southeastern Europe is being overwhelmed with refugees fleeing Syria, Afghanistan, North Africa, and other lands. This brings to mind yet another important event that became the basis of the Islamic calendar: the Hejira, or journey, of Islam’s founder Prophet Muhammad and his followers to Medina. Islam counts the years from the time of Prophet Muhammad´s trip to Medina. From Medina, Islam became a theocracy and began and outward expansion with a succession of wars and campaigns against other groups within the region. Thus began the internal and external struggles to Islam, which lead to General Dempsey assertion in his speech last month where he stated: “the issues that created ISIL and earlier groups such as al-Qaida in Iraq are both internal and external to Islam and fanned by ‘extraordinarily bad governance and disenfranchisement.”

The disturbing specter of millions of refugees seeking to come to the West, and European nations being expected to take in thousands of them, contrasts eerily with the Gulf States and Saudi Arabia apparently unwilling to take any. This raises questions. Is it that they don’t want them or is this all part of a larger plan? History is prologue. Turkey is enabling this mass migration and what will the upshot be for NATO and the West?

Immigration must be the focus of big decisions by the West. On 9/11, America saw how being so supportive of unchecked immigration led to the terror attacks on 9/11.  Pinning Americans against American immigrants from the Middle East in a struggle to control united flight 93 and save our nation. Afterwards, America was supportive and concerned about appearing discriminatory with regard to any continued immigration. More attacks, mainly smaller, lone wolf attacks, followed. Now we contemplate the possibility of boosted immigration en masse and a possible terror cell in every neighborhood worldwide in Western lands taking in “refugees” who may never assimilate within their host nations.

Today’s article, Refugees: The New Oil Field for Turkey is going to look at the reasons behind the refugee crisis.

Hungarian Bishop Laszlo Kiss-Rigo recently characterized the mass flight of Middle Eastern refugees into Europe as an “invasion.” Bishop Kiss-Rigo put his finger on a problem that may ultimately prove as ruinous to the European Union’s survival as any weapon of mass destruction. And although Europe’s physical infrastructures will likely emerge unscathed from this crisis, the free societies that built them could be altered beyond recognition-if not swept away entirely-by an irresistible tide of social, cultural, and political change.

The refugee crisis is rooted in war and all the attendant miseries of the military conflict that is currently ravaging large areas of the MENA region. But the main driving force behind the movement of huge numbers of now-stateless people from the Middle East to Europe is Turkey.

The Smuggling

Turkey has opened her borders with Greece, Syria, and Eastern Europe to facilitate the flow of refugees into the rest of Europe/NATO member states. At the same time Turkish “organizations” are supporting the refugees on their journey. These organizations are actually nothing more than groups of human smugglers who function in much the same fashion as the notorious “coyotes” of Mexico who illegally transport various people from South America through Mexico and into the United States via its southern border.

Sources say they place a premium on their services, collecting $8,000 US or more from each client for leading them out of terrible circumstances on a perilous journey to an indeterminate destination and an uncertain future. As an example of the extreme measures taken just to negotiate the illegal entrance into Germany, kidneys are sometimes sold for $8000 US as reported by a source.

It is an immensely profitable enterprise for both the smugglers and Turkey. Given the vast numbers seeking to escape the Middle East, the potential profits are astronomical, reaching $2.5 billion US dollars in the course of a single year. According to official UNHCR figures, the amounts of refugees from just the nations of war-torn Iraq and Syria that “were granted refugee status that year [2014] or earlier” were 104,426 and 124,374, respectively. Of those, Germany alone took 39.4% and 33.0%, respectively. In Figure 1.1 below, data from this same report displays how the refugees from Syria were distributed in the EU in 2014. The absorption of these refugees and asylum seekers is still a matter of negotiation for these EU member nations. Also, according to a separate UNHCR report, Turkey will, as of December 2015, have taken in a combined total of 1,889,780 refugees, asylum seekers, and stateless persons. Using conservative estimates of these numbers means Turkish smugglers could potentially make $8-15B US.

Resurgence of the Sex Trafficking Industry

Besides the boost in low-wage labor, human slavery and sex trafficking will also receive a boost. According to figures posted in an October 2010 article by Professor Kate Transchel, human trafficking was estimated to be a $32B industry. These numbers may be larger now. In 2005, an International Labor Office (ILO) report stated that a single female held for sexual exploitation could make her captors an average of $67,200 annually in Western Europe and North America. With many focused on the money that can be made in these illegal trades, the long-term ramifications of such a large influx of refugees will go unnoticed or overlooked.

UNHCR Management Structure 

Turkey also realizes significant profits in the form of cash payouts from the UN to provide for the welfare of refugees if they are registered and/or “residing” in Turkey. In the field, “UNHCR’s core work is managed from a series of regional offices, branch offices, sub-offices, and field offices” (UNHCR).

To date, Turkey has taken in an estimated $3 billion US dollars in additional payouts in support of refugee needs.  This money is “accounted” by moving it between various international organizations that have little or nothing to do with the resettlement of refugees in support of UNHCR’s mission.  All the profit made from these refugees does not mention the enormous profit for the Turkish economy, which feeds, clothes, transports, and sustains these refugees.  Turkey has shape-shifted itself and its economy into a bridge for these refugees.

Thus, it can be seen that the refugee crisis is a major boon to the Turkish economy. The misfortune and misery of the refugees is Turkey’s windfall.  Refugees have now become the oil fields of Turkey ensuring regional and global forces to destroy the Turkish economy do not use the price of oil.  This step is a backup in case Turkish incursions into Northern Iraq to secure oil fields from the KRG (under the auspices that it is fighting PKK terrorists) fail.

The Increasing Influx 

There is no end in sight for the crisis. Germany, which is no longer admitting Turks (as it had in the past), has announced that it will take in 800,000 refugees this year (i.e. about 1 percent of Germany’s population).  Additionally, approximately one million refugees from Syria are moving northward on foot through the EU nations toward Sweden. This is forcing NATO to deal with what those of us who served in civil affairs dealt with and which is termed as “civilians on the battlefield.”

Other Reasons for the Surge

This crisis has been a test for the EU.  Will it choose economic profit over regional security? The latter is what it is failing at miserably. The message it has sent to our enemies is that the latter can shape the global battlespace by creating large-scale crises in Europe.  From an American perspective we saw how Mexico was able to do this by opening its borders to the United States for immigrants from South America, which led to a crisis that caused tremendous pressure on the American immigration system this spring.  The same tactic is being used by Turkey to cause havoc in the I-5 Plus One countries, which decided to strike a nuclear/economic deal with Iran, thereby elevating Iran to the position as the only superpower in the region, while excluding Turkey from the EU. 

The economic benefit seen by Europe-which is champing at the bit of having to rebuild a future Syria and their own internal infrastructure after the war is over using cheap labor they are now receiving for future benefit-has blinded them to the fact that the enemy has a say and has made the decision to ensure some of the elements that are being sent across the borders will check their footprint back into Syria in the future.

Furthermore, Russia has introduced ground, air, and naval forces to the Syrian civil war in support of the Assad regime. Is Russia’s involvement in the conflict the result of a deal Turkey has struck with other powers hostile to the nations of the NATO alliance to make trouble in the area known as Europe’s “soft underbelly?” It seems so.

A month ago, leaders in the KRG, which have a good working political and economic relationship with the current Turkish leadership, began a campaign of reducing and even at times shutting off power, water, and electricity in most of the refugee camps in the KRG administered region. This functioned as a means of forcing the departure of the inhabitants. Other Kurdish leaders who are opposed to the current KRG leadership have taken many steps to ensure refugees living in KRG administered areas do not leave the KRG.  In this political and economic fight in the KRG, the refugees can be considered hostages given the fact that they are being used as tools for political and economic gains or instability-and sometimes even as a necessary human shield to be used for the survival of the various Kurdish groups in the region.

What all this amounts to is a message from Turkey and its political allies telling the EU that they control the flow of refugees into Europe and can use population movements as leverage-and a weapon, if need be-to influence European and regional affairs.

There is a certain irony to this outcome. The EU struck a nuclear/economic deal with Iran aimed at increasing European prosperity.

The Sunni states saw this deal as an agreement by the EU to help Iran break the Sunni states of the Middle East.  Given the fact that the EU neglected to secure its borders before concluding its deal with Iran, the Sunni states manufactured and accelerated the refugee crisis after feeling that they were spited in the deal.  The refugee crisis has been ongoing for four years and just in the past month it has suddenly broken the dam.  Why?

Double Standards in the Acceptance of Refugees

Interestingly, several Gulf States in the Near East region, refused to take any refugees whatsoever. Among those was Saudi Arabia. Within its borders, and those of some of its neighbors, are individuals and groups, which have financed the same terrorists that are causing the refugee crisis. However, what Saudi Arabia did offer was to build 200 mosques in Germany for use by those new refugees. One can only imagine that those mosques will be set up for Sunnis and not Shiites, never mind Christian houses of worship.

Closing Statements

We hope that Western nations including the United States-do not retreat from this threat to their security and to their very existence. The refugee crisis is a most powerful weapon employed by ISIS, Turkey, and other hostile powers, and a way must be found to counter it. If the challenge is not met, and met successfully, the result could very well be the end of…

Thus, America and the West must make serious, mature decisions based on common sense and lessons from history both recent and from centuries past.

Will this 9/11 mark that turning point-a Flight 93 revolt to frustrate the plans of those who wish to destroy our civilization?

Christian Assyrian leadership 102

Finally, there are currently an estimated 660,000 Christian Assyrian refugees in the region.  The Assyrian Church of the East has been eager to choose a future patriarch for their church, a move scheduled to include heading back to the KRG administered region to make the selection.  This decision to head back to Arbil, the capital city of the KRG, is being done even though Turkish military incursions are taking place in Northern Iraq and Turkish planes are bombing various Kurdish targets in Iraq.

The decision to possibly root the next patriarch of the Church in the capital city of the KRG has been scheduled for the 19^th of this month.  A future Patriarch of the Assyrian Church of the East may be elected and ordained this month. The first leadership challenge question to be asked of the future Patriarch the second he is elected is:  How does this crisis affect you?  NEC-SE hopes that he has an answer and a solution to this crisis the moment he is elected.
